Commodity Production Guides

Production guides are information booklets that provide farmers with up-to-date recommendations on varieties, pest management and culture for berry and field grown crops. These are targeted to commercial growers in BC. Provided in part by the Lower Mainland Horticulture Improvement Association (LMHIA), these production guides serve as key resources to help farmers make critical decisions about their businesses and their production plans.

Challenge

The Lower Mainland Horticulture Improvement Association needed to maintain handbooks for farmers that were hundreds of pages long. The cost and effort for publishing these books was very expensive and time consuming. Furthermore, keeping the handbooks up-to-date was a significant challenge.

Solution

Using AgrifoodBC’s content management and templating system, a new electronic guide was designed. The contents of the guides can now be instantly updated using a web based system. Farmers can now get updated and view current information whenever it becomes available. In addition, an easy-to-use administration interface has been designed to allow seamless information updating. Farmers now have the option to jump back and forth between sections, print relevant pages and easy access via web-enabled mobile devices.
"Thanks to the AgriFoodBC team for their leadership, expertise and creativity in making this project happen."

Results

Farmers can now access critical, up-to-date information. This can be done easily in turn helping them make timely and accurate business decisions. Equally, the LMHIA can now update booklets, immediately, and in a cost effective manner.
